With the new year just around the corner, now is the perfect time to give your house a thorough deep clean. For me, the “before the new year” deep clean goes beyond your regular weekly or monthly cleaning routine and involves getting into all the nooks and crannies of your home to get rid of dirt, dust, and clutter. That last piece is critical!
This time of year I get really anxious about what is to come that I find myself quickly overwhelmed by excess clutter. So much so, I didn’t get a good night’s sleep last night *insert crying face emoji here.*
Because I was up so late, I did a bit of a brain dump thinking through each room in my house. Along the checklists in the images below, I have some tips for deep cleaning your house to start the new year off fresh:
Checklist by Room:
Seven Tips for the Deep Clean
- Create a plan: Before you start cleaning, it’s helpful to create a plan of action. Make a list of all the areas of your house that need attention and break them down into manageable tasks. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don’t miss any spots.
- Gather your supplies: Make sure you have all the cleaning supplies you need before you start. This of course includes things like all-purpose cleaner, gloves, and microfiber cloths. But you also want to consider items you might need to purchase to improve organization such as new bins and baskets.
- Start from the top: When cleaning your house, it’s best to start from the top and work your way down. This way, any dirt or dust that falls will be cleaned up as you go. Begin by dusting ceiling fans, light fixtures, and other high surfaces. Then, move on to cleaning windows, mirrors, and other glass surfaces.
- Don’t forget the small stuff: Deep cleaning involves getting into all the little nooks and crannies of your home. Make sure to pay attention to areas that are easy to overlook, such as baseboards, under furniture, and inside cabinets and drawers.
- Freshen up your bedding: Start the new year off right by giving your bedding a thorough wash. Wash your sheets, pillowcases, and comforter on a hot water setting to get rid of any germs or allergens. Consider adding some new pillows or a mattress protector to give your bed a fresh, updated look.
- Declutter: Deep cleaning is a great opportunity to declutter and get rid of anything you no longer need or use. Go through each room of your house and get rid of items that you no longer need or use. Donate or sell items that are still in good condition, and recycle or throw away anything that is beyond repair.
- Finish with a deep clean of your floors: Once you’ve finished cleaning all the surfaces in your house, it’s time to tackle your floors. Vacuum carpets and rugs, and mop or sweep hardwood or tile floors. Don’t forget to clean under rugs and in corners, as these areas can easily collect dust and dirt.
By following these tips, you’ll be able to give your house a thorough deep clean to start the new year off on the right foot. Happy cleaning and Happy New Year!
